This is a story of well paid campaign consultants stringing along a candidate with a personal timebomb planted on him for months. I almost (just almost) feel sorry for Babeu's donors, who were kept in the dark and bilked out of thousands of dollars for a campaign that was bound for disaster.

I don't think you were cruel or unfair with this opinion, at all. In fact, I agree with you. And I've been rooting for Gabby to recover since the moment she was shot. It makes me happy to see her recovering so well, but like you, the first thought that comes to mind is our servicemembers. And their families. And the ones with TBI, PTSD, and every other physical injury you can think of. They don't receive the same type of coverage. I don't even think our living Medal of Honor recipients of the recent wars (who, by the way, both saved numerous lives) have seen this much coverage.

To Gabby and her family: God be with you, and I'm sooooo happy you're seeing such immense improvement. Please, in no way, shape, or form, take what I've said here to be an attack on Gabby's well-being. I wish nothing but the best for her. And she is a VERY brave, strong woman.

Thank you for the bravery of this post. While I agree that her case is nothing special in light of the other countless people that serve our country and come back with much worse, I think people have related to Gabby Giffords in a way that they haven't with other victims of this kind of violence. The intense media coverage on January 8, 2011 offered Giffords into their homes - suddenly she wasn't just another person, she was someone they now knew.

That's how I feel towards her: I personally root for her to get better. Every time I see an article or a televised program on her recovery, I read or watch it. I'm invested now. And although those around her may use her injury for their own gain, it's clear that Gabby and her husband are just invested in getting her better.

I think investing in others is human nature. And I would much rather be invested in someone's well-being then not :)

I think my frustration with all the coverage the last week has been that those who died or the others who were injured and still recovering - were really not mentioned and that Gabby was the highlight of all coverage.

Yes - she is the most visible because of her job but let's not forget that six people died and 13 others were shot...Mark Kelly actually something to that effect during one of the interviews he did over the weekend.
